Machir Bay, Islay – December 2009

We decided to take a trip to the beach when these large storm clouds and strong winds came from nowhere. The contrast between the light-coloured sand and the sky was so impressive.

The photograph was taken with a wide angle lens because I wanted to capture as much of the empty beach and sand dunes as possible.  The image has an eerie sense of isolation, and almost feels like another world. Being bright white, the flock of birds added a sense of movement, so you can almost feel the cold wind – this, I think, just adds to the feeling of being alone and somewhere far from anywhere.
